Commodore’s Message

Hello from the comfort of the air-conditioned living room. It looks like the real summer is here. The one where you have a tough time sleeping on the sailboat because they don’t air-condition the things. (Except the boat-a-minimums).

We are getting close to this year’s Erie Rendezvous. The Long Weekend this year is August 5, 6 and 7. Ingrid and I plan (weather permitting) on sailing to Erie on Thursday the 3rd. Past-Comm-Geoff and his lovely new Bride said that this is when they plan on crossing. Ingrid wants to stay close to them in case we run into trouble, and with their close ties with the Canada Coast Guard, we figured it would be our best bet. We will probably be leaving about 7 am or so, if you want to join us the more the better.

This year the Erie Yacht Club is having an outside Luau on the Saturday night. Outdoor patio, lawn, roasted whole pig kind of a party. I phoned them last week and was told that they have to pre order the whole pigs to roast a week in advance. If you plan to attend the Rendezvous and were looking to show up for the Luau we must know in advance. I will be phoning the Erie club this weekend, and will be giving them the numbers of our people who wish to attend. The Erie Yacht Club has always taken good care of us and we would not want crash their party un-announced. If you wish to pass on the Luau and eat in the dining room I am told that it will be business as usual.

For anyone wishing to attend, please email me at id.gillie@sympatico.ca or phone me at 905-388-1060.

I am sure there will be lots of people in the Lagoon this year and we are looking forward to joining them.

Last year Ingrid and I could only get the weekend off. We did not want to miss the get-together so we rode the motorcycle over. We left Hamilton and ran into a real mess on the QEW. Around it we went and headed through St Catharine’s along the 406. US Customs treated us great and we did not have to phone in. Just stop in Fort Erie, it’s like they were waiting for us. The guy at customs (we asked) told us to get onto I-90 until we were past Buffalo and then take the scenic route up under the lake. I think it is Route 5 and 12. What a great ride. The country is all vineyards through there. We stayed at a Comfort Inn up on I-90. There is a major North South Freeway that runs right from 90 to downtown Erie. The trip on the motorcycle was about 10 or 15 minutes. The road that runs out onto the State Park (around the Lagoon) also has a few Motels, and it is not far from the Yacht Club. Last year the club spent the Sunday on the beach and we rode right up to them and parked.

If you feel like a weekend away, and don’t want to sail across, drive over and join us.

Last but not least I thought that mental air-conditioning might help. I am having Geoff include a picture Ingrid took of a cooler day in Dover. Makes you glad it’s hot out. Bet nobody complains after they see it either.

Fair Winds.

Erie Rendezvous

We start out for the Erie Rendezvous with a flotilla of other boats. Leading the way was the ever eager Orial C. We pulled of the dock at about 06:30 after a delivery of hot coffee from our ever gracious dockmates Sea Trek. We head out with Not So Much ahead of us, we could also see Fearless, Minn Tui, Erin Gael, and Victoria J ahead as well. We hoisted sail in a light wind, which seemed strong enough to move our boat, but not quite the strength required for some of the other boats such as the sturdy Victoria J. We quickly changed sail plan to a spinnaker and carefully gull winged to a few miles past the point, at which time we changed to a genoa. That was the last we saw of Fearless and Not So Much as they quickly left us in their wake. Shortly we were past by the new members Kevin & Leslie, and Ross & Corrie in their power boats. Just after their departure from sight, the flying eagle, Eagles Spirit good be seen making its way to the waypoint of Erie. Eventually we were able to sail close to Minn Tui and exchanged pictures of each other’s boats. As we aligned ourselves for the Erie entrance, we could see the West Wind and Seaforth pounding down on our position. We headed to the lagoon for the first night as we had heard that space was limited at the EYC.

The EYC had a wonderful Luau, with LPBYC making up almost half of the party. Commodore David presented awards for the first time crossers, and made an eloquent speech at the Luau, thanking the EYC for allowing us to attend their party.

The next day was filled with the usual activities that are ever present in Erie, reprovisioning vessels, (that’s seaman talk for getting beer), and shopping for the ladies. David and I accompanied our woman folk to the various stores surrounding the Value City aka VC. We waited patiently at the front of the store as the woman scoured for deals. We waited, and we waited, and……then we were joined by other shopping serpas, Graham and Norm. We had our fraternity intact as we discussed, our calling for the day. We had plenty of time to discuss. Norm shared with us that Krys stated she save so much money shopping that they could now take that Mediterranean Cruise. None of us were sure how that math worked on that one, only one thing was certain, Shopping Serpa Norm was going to have a lot to carry!

We headed to the lagoon for a few more days, and eventually motored home over a millpond calm on the Wednesday following. Donna and I were treated to a marvelous dinner at the Chateau de Henderson aka Orial C, and also enjoyed potluck dinners with Commodore David.

We enjoyed the Rendezvous, we had 25 boats that crossed, we missed the quips of the Byer’s and Styan’s, but the band played on, and the Party at the EYC was one for the memories. We showed our American counterparts, that if they build it we will come.

Silent Auction

The silent auction is one of those events that sort of creeps up on you and seems that you never get it organized in time. Thanks to the efforts of Judy, Sue, Kay and Diane the whole thing came together. Special thanks to Tom for putting on the boat races which raise just under $200.00 for the club. The event was enjoyed by all, power boats, sail boats and even those chameleon type boats. Somehow it seems that the white boat always finished first, an observation that should not go unnoticed for next year, however perhaps Tom will re-paint the dice to obscure this fact. Many items were auctions, with several being hotly contested, the M&M picnic pack being one of them. Thanks to Murray H, Judy R, and the Rankins, we were able to jury rig a music system for background music as the Brig recently remove their sound system from the basement.

A good time was had by all with 83 people in attendance, which represents a 20% increase over last years event.

Upcoming Cruise and/or Anchor Out

Well this weekend approaching is calling for rain on Saturday, but that doesn’t seem to have dampened the spirits of cruising director Bob Rankin. Bob is still planning a mini cruise this weekend for those interested, I believe he is looking at a quick jaunt across the lake. As well, there are a few boats planning to head to Erie, Pa.

For those of you wishing to stay closer to home Commodore Dave is planning to anchor out, weather permitting of course.

Details of any of these activities can be obtained from Bob Rankin or David Gillie

Upcoming Year End Meeting and Elections

The season ending meeting will take place Sunday Sept 17/06 10:00 am at the Brig. Coffee will be provided, elections of offices, and reports of activities to be presented. Those wishing to serve on the executive should speak with either David Gillie, Kay Lee or Geoff Sanders

Upcoming Changes

We are going to change our website and newsletter to be more coordinated and useful for our purposes. The next edition of the newsletter will be integrated with in the website. As well every member of Long Point Bay Yacht Club will receive a lpbyc email address. The format of the email address will be the same for all club members. That format will be boatname@lpbyc.com. There will be a mail interface on the website where you can get your mail, the same as you would in hotmail or gmail, or you can also retrieve it using outlook.

The NEXUS card replaces the Pace and CANPASS programs that were originally set up to provide quick border crossing and is being reintroduced after being suspended following 9-11. The NEXUS system, based on cards with pre-clearance information, a photograph and fingerprints, is designed to enhance security at the border while easing traffic bottlenecks.
The Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) website www.cbsa.gc.ca/travel/nexus/ states that “Once approved by both Canada and the U.S. as low-risk travellers, NEXUS members will enjoy a simplified entry process while travelling across the Canada – United States border by land or air.”
Note that CBSA doesn’t mention a NEXUS Water or acknowledge the existence of boaters. However, the FAQ page of the website includes the following question; “ If I have a NEXUS card, do I still need an I-68 to enter the US by boat”. “No” was the one word answer, but how the process works was not explained. I tried calling 1-866-NEXUS 26 but heard no more information than I had already read on the website.
The US Customs and Border Patrol ( CBP) www.cpb.gov website gave link to a little more information. “As NEXUS members, recreational boaters have the privilege of entering the United States from Canada for recreational purposes with only the need to report their arrival to CBP by placing a telephone call. Boaters can use their NEXUS membership in lieu of the I-68 for reporting purposes.”

NEXUS will allow you to make an oral declaration regarding items imported for your personal use.

It does not change the restrictions or obligation to declare, currency over $10,000, commercial goods, controlled substances or weapons.
It takes as least six weeks for the application to be processed and the authorities are expecting a higher number of applicants than normal, so the sooner you apply the better.
Who Qualifies for NEXUS?
Citizens or permanent residents of the US or Canada may qualify. A non-permanent resident may apply if they can demonstrate a need to use the NEXUS lanes.

You may not be accepted for the program if you:
• Are inadmissible to the United States or Canada under applicable immigration laws;
• Provide false or incomplete information on their application;
• Have been convicted of a criminal offence in any country for which they have not received a pardon;
• Have been found in violation of customs or immigration law; or
• Fail to meet other requirements of the NEXUS program.
How Does One Apply?
The forms and an information guide can be downloaded from www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca.
Complete the application form and for our area forward it to NEXUS Program , PO Box 126, Niagara Falls, Ontario L2e 6T1.
If you qualify, you will be invited to visit the enrolment office where your application, proof of citizenship and residency, will be reviewed.
Your biometric fingerprints and a photograph will be taken.
The fee of $80CAN or $50 US will be collected via Money order, Certified Cheque or credit card. Half will go to the US authority and half to the Canadian.
Payment of the fee does not guarantee acceptance in the program.
Final Words
NEXUS is not a travel document. Your admission to the US still depends on your underlying immigration status. Cruising decals still apply.
You may be subject to fines of up to $5000, seizure and criminal penalties if you don’t follow the proper reporting procedures ( I-68, OARS, NEXUS) when entering the US.
